Our History

Wednesday 19th June, 1918
(By H.R.N.)

Having made the necessary arrangements for a basket-ball match at Denmark, Friday, June 7, was chosen as suitable day, so for at least once, the fifteen players from Albany were forced to become early risers. Unfortunately, one of our numbers had the bad luck to miss the train, probably owing to the fact that she slept in. Our train left, as expected, at 5.40 a.m., and by the singing of popular songs our journey was made very enjoyable, although the continuous discords probably caused discomfort among the remaining passengers. We, for the time, knew nothing of other people's feelings. As our train drew into Denmark we were greeted with lusty cheers. We were met by Mr. Pember, who was very good to all of us.

We were taken to breakfast at the Federal Boarding House, after which we were escorted by our opponents to Wilson's Inlet. A dance had been arranged for Friday evening, and we were prepared for an enjoyable time. At the close of this enjoyable evening, the visitors gave three cheers for Denmark, which were followed by cheers for Mr. Darragh and the pianist.

On the following morning we were escorted by our entertainers to the State Farm, where we saw butter in the process of making.

Saturday afternoon brought with it suitable weather and the basket ball match was played. Here we saw very interesting play in both teams. For Denmark, May Offer and Winnie Aller played well. Grace Parry, a forward, played the best game, while Rosie Gilmore, a back, And Rosie Pember, in the goal circle did good work in defending the goal. The match ended in a victory for Albany by 6 goals to 1. Of these goals; Georgie Mercer, who took the place of Edith Kennedy, who was injured during the first ten minutes of the game, - was fortunate enough to throw five. After spending a splendid time in Denmark, we were forced to return to Albany on Saturday afternoon, but we came as conquering heroes.
